Beat Devils "Andy The Frog"

If there's one thing I love more than crisps, it's Moscow's Beat Devils. Always a class act and never afraid to push the boundaries. Indeed they say fuck boundaries and scene traditions. That's one of the things I love about em. That and the fact they know how to write a catchy ditty and mix it with just the right amount of polish so as it stands out from the usual banal stuff littering the scene. Some bands add so much gloss that it tries to cover up the inadequacies beneath. These boys have no inadequacies. Au contraire, the talent is dripping off em like an egg sandwich. So last month they released an accompanying video for their song Andy The Frog and there's not a zombie or ghoul to be seen. HOORAH! See? Fuck scene traditions. Directed by Katya Merzlyakova and produced by Svetlana Shabaeva-Markina, it's a 3 minute movie-ette par excellence. Have a gander below and check out their Facebook page while you're at it. The Beat Devils are a class act. There's no two ways about it. They're the kind of band that never disappoint with their releases and this is no exception. The boys play that perfect blend of neo rockabilly and psychobilly that I instantly love! Good songs can be let down by shit production when it comes to anything with "billy" on the end of it. Especially the slap bass sound. The bass sounds excellent here and drives each song in a way that makes it impossible not to slap your leg in time and have a big satiated grin on your gob. The guitar is clean, reverby in all the right places and played faultlessly. The drums are blended into the mix to perfection adding to the infectious beat. The vocals are reminiscent of The Stringbeans (especially in the pronunciation department). It's blatantly obvious that the boys are steeped with influences from the neo/psycho outfits that came out of Europe in the mid-80s but instead of trying to recreate that sound, they take the essence of it and add their own energy and take it off in a direction that's both refreshing and contemporary. There are three neo covers on here which really prove the point I made about those influences. Absolutely excellent versions of songs by the Polecats, Ratmen and Wigsville Spliffs. The boys have written some instant classics on here but they haven't rested on their laurels and just flung in a few note-for-note covers to fill out the album. They've put (Tribute) beside the song titles because they've reworked those songs and made em so Beat Devils-esque that if you didn't already know the songs you'd think that they penned them. They work seamlessly with the Beat Devils originals. I could wax lyrical about this album for another three paragraphs such is my enthusiasm for what the band have produced here but I think you get the gist of it. Plainly put, "Dig My Beat"? Too fuckin' right I do!

Beat Devils "Night Falls Down" (music video)

Bit of an unusual one this time around. Unusual as in it's not a record review but a video review. The Beat Devils...a name that instantly conjures up tones of power neo rockabilly and psychobilly have made their first music video for their song Night Falls Down. And...it's not what you'd expect at all. The boys have ventured in to the country...perhaps gothic country field and the result is something that is sure to have Johnny Cash tapping on his coffin lid with glee. Filmed at dusk, with some gorgeously dark scenery, the footage lends itself perfectly to the lyrical content. The chorus reverberates in your head long after the song has finished. The ponces in Nashville could take a leaf out of the Beat Devils book when it comes to writing country. Why's that? Because the shite they're passing off as country in Nashville these days isn't fucking county...it's soft rock sung with a southern accent. That's why. Anyway, the Beat Devils have given us some excellent projects in the past and this is no different. Proving once again that they are no one-trick ponies. It gets on my tits in one way that the talent the boys possess gets ignored by the major players in the record industry but with that said, in another way I'm glad that these moguls remain clueless as fuck knows what kind of homogenized watered down piss they'd turn it in to. But I digress, have a look and a listen. It's not for the cringe-worthy line dancing brigade but for the true connoisseurs of good music.
