King Moroi "Story Of Dino And Fairy/Me And My Cat"

(Self-released 2019)

Story Of Dino And Fairy
Me And My Cat

I love 7 inches. I keep one at all times in me trousers. Alas it doesn't compare to the 7 inches of black gristle I had in me hands prior to writing this. King Moroi are back with a double A-sider featuring two stylistically different ditties. First up we have the countrified rockin' psycho belter Story Of Dino And Fairy, complete with steel guitar. I love steel guitar me. Lyrically it puts a whole new spin on the tried and tested formula of the tragedies of love you'll find in just about every country song. I love this song. It's right up my street. Speaking of lyrics, there's an insert included with this release with lyrics for both songs...and all the art has once again been masterfully created by Horror Rudey. Flipping her over we have a kick in the bollocks psychobilly song featuring passages that have a cleverly constructed ascending choral cacophony. Having listened to both songs on here a few times, it really cements the fact that I'm glad to belong to this scene. Contrary to what an outsider may think, the music (and in this case, King Moroi), offers variety and my mind boggles as to how those aforementioned outsiders can be drip-fed drivel by "popular artists" with not an inkling of how to play a musical instrument between them...or write their own songs. Thank fuck I discovered psychobilly as an impressionable teen and never grew up. Anyway, it's been three years since the last King Moroi release but the boys haven't been sitting on their arses. They've been busy touring and playing festivals and writing new material for future releases. This release you can buy direct from the band. It's official release date is November 29th and there'll be a brand new video to coincide with it. In the meantime, get those letters to Santa c/o King Moroi. Seemingly he makes an exception for psychobillies who are rarely nice.

King Moroi "Let Me Out!!"

(Bellfire Records 2016)

Let Me Out
Dr. Cogan

Well, what have we here then? Only 7 inches of red vinyl sexiness from King Moroi, that's what! The A side is instantly memorable and stylistically reminds me somewhat of Asmodeus. It's a ballsy in-your-face ditty with a battle-cry chorus that begs to played on repeat. The lyrics are included on the sleeve which I always love to see. Kitty In A Casket appear briefly too for added sex appeal. It's a mid-tempo psychobilly stomper that will have us all pulling evil grimaces for just over 3 minutes. Well, I noticed my facial expression change whilst being transformed by the song anyway. Flip it over and we have an instrumental that's in stark contrast to the "fuck you!" stylings of the A side. Another mid-paced ditty but this time around it's a very clean sounding neo rockabilly 2 minutes of pleasure. That's twice as long as my usual pleasure-time lasts! It's no mean feat to release something so eclectic seeing as there are only 2 songs! Horror Rudey has been drafted in on artwork duties once more. I like when bands use the same artist for their releases as it lends them a kind of instantly recognisable trademark; a bit like Geo Parkin with the Texans and Pieter M. Dorrenboom with Batmobile. King Moroi are one of the hardest working bands on the scene and are adamant that their efforts will see them rise within the ranks of psychobilly. The talent is there in spades so I can see that work ethic paying off. To grab hold of this platter you'll need to contact the band directly or pick it up at one of their shows. It's available in black as well as the aforementioned red vinyl and as a digital download for all you psychobillies from the future! No CD version will be forthcoming though.

I must admit I'd never come across King Moroi before until this release. Aesthetically the album looks great coming in a gatefold digipak with some excellent artwork by Horror Rudey. There are some world class artists on this scene that don't get the recognition they deserve (me included *ahem*). But does it sound as good as it looks? Yes. Yes it does. It kicks off with a sound that to my ears is reminiscent of the Krewmen sound during their Egyptian phase....ie. the Into The Tomb album. That sound pops up again here and there throughout the album. Lead vocals are shared between guitarist Jerry Toothpaste and slap bassist Smirnov. At least I think they are as the vocals take the band in very different directions stylistically with one vocal being of the clean, rockin' psychobilly variety and the other being of the punkabilly or psychOi! variety. I prefer the former, but that's just me. The latter seems ultra popular on the psychobilly circuit. So you could say they're catering for both sides of the coin. The guitar sound/style give the boys that much needed stamp of individuality in a scene that's swamped by "itallsoundsthesame-abilly". No mean feat for a band to come up with something fresh-sounding when every other band wants to sound like their 1980s forefathers. Yes, I know I mentioned the Krewmen earlier on you nitpicking shower of cunts but that was a comparison, I'm not saying they're a Krewmen tribute act. They sound fuck all like em, the guitar just reminded me of that Egyptian thing they had going on. Quit bustin' my balls. But anyway, King Moroi. A powerful release from the German trio of male models that will please both fans of old school psychobilly and their upstart punkabilly siblings alike.
