The Retarded Rats "I Hate Chocolate"

(Killjoy Records 2017)

The Head And The Axe
Survival

The never-predictable Killjoy Records have unleashed on us some brand new *deep inhale* oldschoolpsychogaragesurfpunkabilly from The Retarded Rats. This time coming out on sexy flexi-disc no less! Jaysus I haven't seen one of those since getting one free on the front of some paranormal magazine years ago purporting to feature "voices of the dead". So, both band and record label breaking from the more traditional formats but with that said, download codes are included for all you psychobillies from the future. Before I crack on and talk about the music though, the packaging needs a special mention as it's excellent and very cleverly constructed. But you'll just have to buy it to see for yourself. It comes in a gatefold sleeve with lyrics included. I love it when that happens. Once again it's strictly limited to 500 so grab one now before they appear on Discogs for extortionate money. Oh, and F.-J from the Beam Orchestra is on drumming duties here as opposed to our Kris The Kid.  So, onto the music. Side A sounds like a sci-fi asylumesque mash-up. If you read that in a review pertaining to any other genre you'd probably give it a miss immediately and go back to watching The X Factor or some similar shite. But this is our genre and all the offshoots that go along with it so that description is appealing!....and apt. Flipping her over you get more of that evil sounding lunatic fringe fare that has become synonymous with The Retarded Rats. They definitely are unique. They seem to be able to blend genres yet retain a psychobilly core but still have so much more going on. If these are the sounds emanating through their respective heads whilst putting pen to paper or finger to fret board, then those heads much surely be deranged. God I love deranged heads. This is the kind of record that reverberates in your skull even after you've finished listening. Add to that some atypical psychobilly lyrics and you just know you're on to a winner.

The Retarded Rats "Screams From The 10th Planet"

(Killjoy Records 2016)

The Engine Starts
No Time To Die
Neo-Psychobilly
You Lost My Brain
Headshot
Searching
Fingertip In The Sky
Inquisition
The Key
Coulrophobia
Nananananananananananana
Screams From The 10th Planet

From the jangly euphony that opens this album you just know you're in for some excellent underground psychobilly with lashings of garage and surf reverb. It's lo-fi without suffering from piss-poor production. The stuff on here would be right at home on 1984's Rockabilly Psychosis And The Garage Disease album. It sounds like the Rats have been influenced by just about every act on that classic compilation and then some. Now I fuckin' love slap bass...who doesn't? It sounds great on here with Anna thumping the absolute shite out of it. It's nicely accentuated by some cracking heal-palmed guitar work in places and drums that have that nice snappy snare sound. It's the kind of sound that lots of psychobilly bands strive to create on their recorded work but fail to do so. Psychobilly for all intents and purposes is an underground sound and The Retarded Rats are thee sound of the underground. All the songs on here bar 3 were recorded live on 8-track wheel to wheel. It's available on limited edition (500 copies) clear red vinyl with extra thick sleeve and poster inlay and wait for it....on cassette too! There are only 100 cassettes available. Let's hope there are 100 cassette players left in the world!! Right, I'm off to listen to Nananananananananananana again...and you can too via the gift of my YouTube uploading skills.

The Retarded Rats "Underground Is Dead"

(Killjoy Records 2015)

Underground Is Dead (Extended Radio Chart Version)
 One - ? - Three
Underground Is Dead (Real Life Version)
Blurring the lines between psychobilly and garage punk. That's the sonic delights to be gorged on on this limited edition 7" EP from Germany's Retarded Rats. Fronted by slap bassist and vocalist par excellence, Anna Killjoy, and bringing up the rear is Flatty Killjoy on guitar and Mutant Ann on the skins. More often than not, female-fronted psycho outfits are way off the mark. Annoying vocal styling and music that falls in to the "punk with a double bass" variety. The Retarded Rats however are bang on the money. What a breath of fresh air to hear a girl-laden psychobilly band that isn't relying on gimmickry to gain popularity but instead rely on the sound. Isn't that the way it's supposed to be? Yeah, a cool image is one thing but isn't worth a shite if the music falls short. The Retarded Rats tick both boxes. They look good AND they sound good. If you took all the singles that were released on the Big Beat label back in the 80s...both psycho and garage punk...melted em down and re-pressed em as one great big 7" slab of black sexiness then this is what you'd get.
